Additional Methods for Data Input

Most drafting work performed with a 2D CAD system involves manual input in order to create the content. However, there are some additional methods that can be applied to assist in this process. These ultimately involve the insertion of graphical data that can be used either as drafting references, or as the final vector graphic entities themselves. This section describes and discusses some of these methods.

Automatic Paper-drawing Digitization

There is software available that can recognize shapes and lines in raster images and then automatically produce approximate vector-graphic equivalents. This process is referred to as ‘raster to vector conversion’. If you have a drawing that only exists as a hard copy and you wish to convert it to a CAD-based drawing – that is, to a vector-graphic format – you can consider utilizing current scanning technology and raster to vector conversion to assist in the process.
